How to Tell When You Need to Replace Your Windows
Posted on February 28, 2015.

Having good-quality windows in your home can go a long way in saving you time and money. Older homes often have windows that leak or are not air tight, which could leave you with a high utility bill. It is not always easy to tell when you need replacement windows, but there are a few signs that can help you determine when the time is right.
Drafts
Almost all windows allow for a little bit of air to go in and out of the home, but if you begin feeling drafts throughout your home it could be a sign that you are in need of new windows. Installing weather stripping is often just a temporary fix for a problem that could be more than damaged stripping around your window.
Windows are Difficult to Open and Shut
If you cannot get your windows to stay open, or if they get stuck and you cannot close them, it is probably time for replacement windows. Not only can difficult windows be inconvenient, it can also be dangerous. A house fire may require residents to escape through a window, but if it cannot be opened there would be a big problem.
Condensation Inside the Glass
Any condensation in between double-paned windows may indicate that there is a problem with the seal. This prevents the window from creating an airtight barrier between your home and the cold outside. You shouldn’t leave a failing window installed, since you may be losing valuable heated or cooled air from your home.
High Energy Bills
If you notice that your monthly energy bills suddenly become more expensive, you could have windows that are not energy efficient. You could be paying much more than you should for your heating and cooling costs, just to lose the air through a window that is outdated and needs replacing.
If you think you need replacement windows, don’t hesitate to call in a professional to handle the change. You can enjoy a home free from drafts and uncomfortable temperatures when you have the right windows installed.
